how can we help?

Everything we get asked about Tangle and the module plugins, written down: installing, accounts, licences, trials, paying, the subscription, every control in the rack, updates and privacy. Search it, or browse by topic. Anything it does not answer, email and a person replies.

before you buy what it is, what it costs, what it runs on

The short version: the rack is free, every other module is a plugin of its own, and one licence covers both.

What is Tangle, in one paragraph?

Tangle is a modular effects rack that runs as a plugin inside your DAW (VST3, Audio Unit, AAX). You add modules from a menu and patch cables from any jack to any other, by hand or by pressing randomize. The rack itself is a free download with six audio modules and the whole CV and logic system in it. Every other audio module is sold on its own, as a single plugin with the module's modulation built in, and that one licence also unlocks it inside the rack.

The Tangle page shows it running. Your first 10 minutes walks through every control.

Is Tangle really free?

The rack is free. Download it, load it on a track, and you have six audio modules (monster energy, long tan, salt of the earth, gorpy, flanger turnout 2 and canary) plus every CV, clock and logic tool to patch with. There is no trial clock on any of that, and nothing in it expires.

The other audio modules are paid. We say "the rack is free" rather than "Tangle is free" because the second one is only half true. The download needs a free account; no card is asked for.

What does a module cost, and what are the ways to pay?

Three ways, and all three are on every module page at the same time:

  • one module, US$25 one-off. A perpetual licence: it does not expire, and it unlocks the module both as its own plugin and inside the rack.
  • all-access, US$9 a month for every module, in the rack and as plugins, new releases included. Cancel any time.
  • Tangle Complete, US$399 one-off for every module outright, later modules delivered too. Anything you already own is skipped, not charged for twice.

Prices are in US dollars. There is no sale theatre: the price on the page is the price.

Is it an instrument? Does it take MIDI?

No. Tangle and the modules are effects. They go on an audio track, a bus or a send, and they take no MIDI in or out. Some modules generate sound (the voices and resonators), but they are driven by the audio you feed them and by CV, not by notes.

Which formats and operating systems?

VST3 on macOS and Windows, Audio Unit on macOS, and AAX for Pro Tools on both. Any 64-bit DAW that loads one of those qualifies: Reaper, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Studio One, Bitwig, Cubase, FL Studio and Pro Tools among them.

macOS 13 or later for the Weaver Audio Manager; the plugins themselves run on macOS 11 and 12 too, installed with the installers instead (see installing without the Manager). Windows 10 or later, 64-bit. No Linux. No VST2, AUv3 or CLAP, and no standalone application.

The one page to send anyone who asks: system requirements.

Does it work in Pro Tools?

Yes, as AAX. In the Manager, switch pro tools on for the plugins you want there; it starts with that on if it finds Pro Tools on the computer. The AAX builds are much larger, so leave it off if you do not use Pro Tools. Installed Pro Tools afterwards? Turn it on in the Manager's settings or on the plugin's card and apply again.

Apple Silicon, Intel, Windows on ARM?

The macOS build is a universal binary: native on Apple Silicon and on Intel, no Rosetta. Windows is 64-bit x64. Windows on ARM has not been verified.

Is there iLok or a dongle?

No. A serial and an account. The Manager activates everything you own when you sign in, so most people never type the serial at all.

Can I try before I buy?

Three ways, none of which asks for a card:

  • the rack is free, so the patching, the CV and the six free modules can be tried for nothing, for as long as you like.
  • every paid module has a 14-day free trial as its own plugin, full function, on your own material. Start it from the plugin's licence window or the Manager.
  • inside the rack, a locked module offers try it for 15 min (one try a day per module) or its own 14-day trial.

The details are under trials.

What currency am I charged in, and is there tax on top?

Prices are in US dollars and that is what the card is charged; your bank converts at its own rate, so the number on your statement will differ slightly from the one on the page. Nothing is added at checkout: the price you see is the price you pay.

Weaver Audio is an Australian company that is not registered for GST, so no GST is included and the document you get is a receipt rather than a tax invoice.

Is there a student or education discount? An affiliate programme?

Not at the moment, either of them. The rack and its six modules are free to everyone, which covers most of a classroom. If you teach a class and want the full set for your students, email and we will work something out.

Can I buy it anywhere else?

No. Everything is sold direct, from this website. There are no resellers and no bundle aggregators, so a Weaver Audio licence offered anywhere else is not one we issued.

your account sign-in, passwords, email, deleting

One account holds your serials, your downloads, your receipts and your trials. Sign-in runs on Firebase Auth; your password never touches our server.

Do I need an account?

Yes, and it is free. Every download, including the free rack, starts from your account page, because that is where your licences, your trials and your 30-day refund window live. An account is an email address and a password, or a Google sign-in.

Make one on the account page: a display name, your email and a password of at least 8 characters. Ticking the terms box is required; the product-news box is optional, and serials and password resets are sent whichever way you set it.

I forgot my password

Use Forgot your password? on the account page. We email a reset link. It works once and expires about an hour after it is sent; using it signs you out everywhere, the site and the plugins alike, and signs you back in with the new password. You can ask for one a minute per address.

I bought as a guest. How do I get into my account?

A purchase without signing in sets up an account for the address you paid with. The second email from your order, "Your Weaver Audio account is ready", has a link to choose a password. That link works once and expires in about an hour; if it has, use Forgot your password? with the same address instead.

You do not need the account to use what you bought: the plugin activates with the serial alone. Already had an account under that email? Same email, same account; the purchase is already in it.

How do I change my email address, or merge two accounts?

There is no self-serve control for this yet. Email us from the old address (or with an order reference) and say which address you want, and we move it. The same goes for a purchase that landed under a second address.

How do I delete my account, and what happens to my licences?

Settings → danger zone on the account page: enter your password and type DELETE. It removes your sign-in, your profile, your purchase list and your review, and unsubscribes you.

Your licence serials keep working. Keep a copy of them before you delete, because the page you copied them from goes with the account. Order records are kept for five years under Australian tax law, and the record that a computer has already had a trial survives too. Patches you shared to the community stay published; email before you delete if you want them taken down.

Signed up with Google and have no password to enter? Email from that address and we do it by hand.

Can I see what you hold about me?

Yes. Settings → download my data hands you a JSON file of everything your account holds. The privacy policy lists what each record is and how long it is kept.

Which emails will I get, and how do I stop them?

Always: your licence serial, your receipt, a password reset you asked for, and a download link you asked for from a phone. Those are not marketing and have no unsubscribe.

Only if you opted in: product news, and the occasional note while you are new. Every one of those carries an unsubscribe link, and the toggle under Settings → email preferences does the same thing. One exception: if your address hard-bounces or you mark a mail as spam, we stop writing to it and the toggle does not lift that; email us and we will.

downloading and installing the manager, the installers, where things go

One app, the Weaver Audio Manager, installs the whole catalogue and keeps it up to date. Getting started has the same steps with pictures.

What do I download?

The Weaver Audio Manager. It lives on your account page: sign in and the right one for your computer downloads straight away. It installs the free Tangle rack and every module, bought or on trial, and needs Windows 10 or macOS 13 or later.

Reading this on a phone? The account page offers to email you the link for your computer instead.

Why does a free download need an account?

Because the account is where your licences, your trials and your 30-day refund window live, and the Manager signs into it to know what to install and activate. It costs nothing, and no card is asked for.

Can I install without the Manager? (macOS 11 and 12)

Yes. Under install without the manager on the account page there are two installers: Tangle (VST3 and AU) and Tangle with Pro Tools (adds AAX, and is much larger). They run on Windows 10 and macOS 11 or later, so they are the route for a Mac on Big Sur or Monterey, where the Manager will not run but the plugins do.

They do not update themselves. Activate what you own from any plugin, by signing in there or with a serial. If you start using the Manager later, it takes over the installation.

Windows says the installer is unrecognised or from an unknown publisher

The Manager is code-signed as Weaver Audio Pty Ltd. SmartScreen can still warn about a certificate it has not seen often yet. Check the publisher name on the dialog; if it says Weaver Audio Pty Ltd, click More info, then Run anyway. If the name is missing or different, stop and email us.

If Windows Defender quarantined it: Windows Security → Protection history → the item → Allow on device. We never send downloads as email attachments; the only place to get them is your account page.

Installing on a Mac

Open the download, drag Weaver Audio Manager into Applications, and open it from there. The Mac version is signed and notarised by Apple, so it opens normally. When you apply plugins, your Mac asks for your password once, because plugins go into the shared folders every DAW reads.

Where do the plugins install?
windows vst3
C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3
windows aax
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Avid\Audio\Plug-Ins
windows shared core
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Weaver Audio. Every Weaver plugin loads from here. Move or delete it and none of them will load; it is removed by itself once the last Weaver plugin is uninstalled.
macos vst3
/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3
macos au
/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components
macos aax
/Library/Application Support/Avid/Audio/Plug-Ins

Presets live elsewhere, in your user folder, so reinstalling never touches them (see where presets live).

Why does it ask for an administrator password?

The Manager itself installs just for you, with no administrator prompt. Plugins are different: they go into the system-wide folders above so every DAW can see them, and the operating system asks for permission once each time you apply. On Windows that is an administrator prompt from Weaver Audio Pty Ltd; on macOS it is your Mac's password.

The first time, the Manager also shows what you accept before it installs anything: the licence, our terms and our privacy policy, on one short page.

My DAW does not show the plugin

Run a plugin rescan. Most DAWs do it on their own; to force one:

  • reaper: Options → Preferences → Plug-ins → VST → Re-scan.
  • ableton, logic, others: toggle the VST3 or AU folder off and on in Preferences, or restart the DAW to trigger a rescan.
  • pro tools: the AAX build only installs with pro tools switched on in the Manager; check that first, then restart Pro Tools.

Still missing? Tell us your OS, your DAW and the plugin name and we will look.

There are three Tangle plugins in my DAW. Which one?

The rack ships as three plugins so it fits the track it is on: Tangle (stereo in, stereo out), Tangle Mono Stereo (mono in, stereo out) and Tangle Mono. Pick the one that matches the track. The single-module plugins adapt to the track on their own.

How do I remove a plugin, or all of them?

In the Manager, untick the plugin and click apply. It is removed; your presets stay, and so does your licence, so ticking it again later brings it straight back. Removing the last Weaver plugin removes the shared core folder too.

licences and activation serials, machines, offline, moving house

A licence you buy is perpetual. Everything in this section is a restatement of section 1.3 of the terms, which is the document that binds us.

How does activation work?

Sign into the Manager and it activates everything you own on that computer; there is no serial to type. Without the Manager, open any Weaver plugin and either sign in from its licence window or paste your serial. Activation needs an internet connection that once; after that the plugin works offline (see offline).

Bought something new while the Manager was already installed? Open it again: it activates new purchases as it starts.

Where is my serial?

In your purchase email, and on the account page under your licences, with a copy button. A serial is a short prefix followed by four groups of four characters; it never uses the letters I, L, O or U, so a 0 is always a zero and a 1 is always a one.

How many computers can I activate?

A licence you own activates on two computers at once. The all-access subscription activates on three. Releasing a machine on your account page frees its seat on every licence at once. Replaced a computer and the count is wrong? Email and we reset it.

Moving to a new computer

On the account page, under your machines, release the old one (or Deactivate on the licence itself). The plugins on that computer will ask for a serial the next time they load. Then install on the new computer and sign in; it activates there.

Presets live in your user folder, not with the plugins, so copy that folder across if you want them (see where presets live).

Does it work offline?

Yes. A plugin confirms its licence when you activate it and re-confirms roughly every three months. In between it needs no internet connection at all. If it has not been able to reach us for about three months it asks you to reconnect once, and carries on.

The all-access subscription checks in more often, about once a week, because it has to know the subscription is still paid.

Does buying a module unlock it in the rack too?

Yes. One licence, both places: the standalone plugin and the same module inside Tangle. Activate the plugin on a computer and the rack there picks it up at its next licence check; sign into the rack once and your modules follow your account to every machine. There is no second purchase and no upgrade path.

If I sign out of the Manager, do my plugins stop?

No. Signing out of the Manager removes nothing and deactivates nothing. The plugins keep their activation until you release the machine or the licence re-confirms and finds it has been released elsewhere.

"Invalid serial", or it asks me to activate again
  • check the connection: activation needs the internet that once.
  • copy, do not type: paste the serial from the account page. There are no I, L, O or U characters in one.
  • update: an old build can refuse a new serial; apply the latest release in the Manager.
  • asking again after it worked: the machine was released on your account page, or the three-monthly re-confirm could not reach us. Sign in once and it clears.

None of that? Send us the serial, your OS and what the window says.

What happens to my licence if Weaver Audio stops trading?

It is written into the terms rather than left to goodwill. A licence you buy is perpetual and does not need us to be online between its three-monthly checks. If the licence server is ever retired, a release that does not need it gets published first. Discontinuing a product does not switch it off: the licences already issued keep working and your serial stays on your account. A licence is revoked in exactly two cases: a breach of the terms, or a purchase that was refunded or charged back.

That is a summary of section 1.3 of the terms and conditions. About says the same thing at more length.

Will a future version cost me money?

Point releases are free inside a major version, and the Manager offers each one as it comes out. A new major version may be a paid upgrade; if it is, the version you own keeps working and keeps its licence.

trials 14 days as a plugin, 15 minutes in the rack

No card is ever asked for. The rack and its free modules never expire.

How does the 14-day trial work?

Every paid module has a 14-day trial as its own plugin: full function, on your own material, no payment details, nothing charged at the end. Start it from Start Free Trial in the plugin's licence window, or tick the plugin in the Manager and open it. You will be asked to confirm your email address first if you have not already.

A trial is once per computer for each plugin. Buy during the trial and activating with the serial picks up right where you left off, presets and all.

Can a trial be reset or extended?

No. The record that a computer has had a trial of a plugin is kept, and it survives deleting your account. If something went wrong during yours (a crash, a machine that died on day two), email and tell us what happened.

Trying a module inside the rack: "locked · try it"

A module you do not own shows a locked · try it tag in the rack. Click it and it offers:

try it for 15 min
Unlocks the module in the rack for fifteen minutes. One try a day per module.
start free trial
Its 14-day trial, as above.
see options
The module's page: buy it outright, or take all-access.

A trial of the standalone plugin is for the standalone; the rack has its own ways in, above. A module in a patch you saved during a 15-minute try stays locked when the try ends.

Does the free rack expire?

No. The rack, its six audio modules and the whole CV and logic system have no trial clock. They are yours for as long as you want them.

buying, receipts and refunds stripe, guest checkout, codes, 30 days

Payment is handled by Stripe. Card details go to them and never touch our servers.

How do I pay?

By card, on a Stripe checkout page. Stripe asks for a billing address. We get back the sale record described in the privacy policy; we never see the card number.

Do I have to sign in to buy?

A single module can be bought without signing in; an account is set up for the address you pay with (see I bought as a guest). All-access and Tangle Complete need you signed in first, because they attach to an account rather than to a serial.

Receipts and invoices

We email your receipt when you buy, and the account page can reprint it under orders & receipts if you bought signed in. Monthly all-access receipts are on the account page rather than emailed each month. Weaver Audio is not registered for GST, so the document is a receipt, not a tax invoice; it carries the ABN-level company details and the amount in US dollars.

Discount codes

A code goes in the box on the Stripe checkout page. When one does not apply it is almost always one of two things: a first-time-customer code on an account that has bought before, or a code that has expired. We do not run sales; the price on the page is the price.

A review voucher (see review vouchers) is a code too. It is tied to the account it was issued to, so use it signed in; it works once, on a purchase at or above its minimum spend, before its expiry date.

Review vouchers

About a week after you buy a module, Tangle Complete or all-access, we may email you once to ask for a review. Write one and, once it is approved, you get a single-use voucher code by email. The offer states the amount, the minimum spend and how long the code lasts (as this is written: US$9 off a purchase of US$9 or more, for 90 days). It has no cash value and cannot be exchanged for money. One voucher per account.

The voucher is for any honest review, whatever the star rating. Two stars with your reasons earns it the same as five, and the review goes on the site as you wrote it. Reviews that earned a voucher are marked as such wherever we show them, as Australian Consumer Law asks.

Reviews are written on your account page, under settings, and every review is read before it appears.

Refunds: 30 days, no questions

Email [email protected] within 30 days of a purchase and we refund it in full, to the card you paid with, no questions asked. The licence ends and the serial may be revoked. Refunding a subscription payment does not cancel the subscription; cancel that separately (see cancelling) or ask us to.

Your rights under Australian Consumer Law sit on top of this and are not limited to 30 days.

Vouchers have no cash value. If you refund a purchase you used a review voucher on, you get back what you paid; the voucher is not reissued.

I paid, but nothing arrived

The page after checkout shows your serial with a copy button, and the licence email usually lands within a minute or two. Nothing after ten minutes? Check spam, then email with your order reference and we send it by hand.

Bought as a guest and the purchase is not on your account page? Guest purchases are found by email address, so confirm your address first (the link in the account email), and it appears.

Tangle Complete or all-access?

Tangle Complete (US$399 once) is every module on permanent licences: one payment, nothing lapses, and modules released later are delivered to you too. Anything you already bought outright is skipped, not charged for twice. All-access (US$9 a month) is every module for as long as you pay. Complete is for someone who knows they will use the rack for years; all-access is for a project, or for deciding.

the all-access subscription what it covers, cancelling, what stops

Every module, in the rack and as plugins, for US$9 a month. Cancelling never touches a licence you bought outright.

What does all-access cover?

Every audio module in the catalogue, each as its own plugin and unlocked inside the rack, plus every new release while you are subscribed. It activates on up to three computers. The Manager installs the lot with one tick.

How do I cancel?

Settings → Manage or cancel subscription on the account page opens Stripe's billing portal. Cancelling takes effect at the end of the period you have already paid for. Or email us and we do it.

What happens to my plugins and sessions when it ends?

Subscription modules stop when the subscription does; they stay listed on your account so they come straight back if you resubscribe. Anything you bought outright is separate and stays yours.

Inside the rack there is one deliberate exception: a module already sitting in a patch you saved keeps processing when that session reopens, on a computer that held a paid licence for it; what is refused is placing it anew. Your old sessions are not silenced. Patches saved during a trial or a 15-minute try do not get that; nor do the standalone plugins, which simply stop until you subscribe or buy.

A payment failed

Stripe retries it, and emails you to update the card. Your plugins check in about once a week; if the subscription has lapsed they lock a few days later, and unlock again at the next check once it is paid.

using the rack every control in tangle

Modules sit in the middle, sound comes in and goes out on the right, the randomize shelf runs down the left. Your first 10 minutes with Tangle walks through the same controls on a live screenshot.

Patch into its jacks and that is what your DAW hears. out sets the level and lim is a safety limiter so a runaway feedback patch cannot hurt you. Drag a meter's handle to trim; double-click to reset.

Tangle goes on a track like any effect plugin: audio comes in, runs through what you patched, and comes out changed.

Adding modules

add modules opens the catalogue, grouped by family, with a search box. Right-click empty rack space to search from where you are. The six free modules are in there with everything else; a module you do not own shows the locked · try it tag (see trying a module in the rack).

Cables

Drag from one jack to another. Click the middle of a cable to remove it. Grab a cable near one end to pick that end up and move it. The view menu can show cables draped, routed or hidden when a dense patch gets hard to read.

CV: knobs that move themselves

Every knob has a small CV jack at its top right, the little cog. Patch anything into it and the knob follows: an LFO, an envelope follower reading the audio, the transient detector firing on hits, the timing module laying out a musical grid, or a noise source wandering. All the CV, clock and logic modules are free, in every download.

Rack presets

The rack starts at Init. There is a factory folder, and a * after a preset's name means you have changed it since. The … menu saves, and has copy patch to clipboard and paste patch from clipboard, which is the quickest way to move a patch between sessions or send one to a friend as text.

Community patches

The community tab lists patches other people have shared. Click one and it loads. To share yours, name it and press share; sharing needs you signed into the rack. You can share up to 24. Shared patches stay published if you later delete your account, so email first if you want them removed.

Audio history in the rack

The strip under the rack records the main output. Press arm and it keeps the last 30 seconds rolling; found something good while you were tweaking? Click-drag across the waveform to select it and drag the slice straight into your DAW timeline. (The standalone plugins' strip is always recording with nothing to arm; see the standalone's audio history.)

View, undo, zoom and themes

Undo and redo (ctrl or cmd + z). Zoom from 50% to 200%. Cables draped, routed or hidden. The sun and moon switch between the paper theme and the ink theme. The sign in button on the bar is where the rack learns which modules you own, and see all-access is the one-tick way to unlock all of them.

Click a slot's tab once to type-lock it (randomize keeps that modulator kind), again to lock everything in it, again to unlock.

The two modulator slots and the six modulators

Pick a modulator from a slot's tabs, drag a patch cable from its output onto any knob, and that knob moves on its own, no DAW automation required. Both slots can run the same kind, each its own copy, and slot 2 can be switched off.

lfo
Smooth cyclic movement: sine, triangle, square, sample and hold, or a shape you draw.
curve
A looping contour you draw by hand: smooth, spiked or stepped.
noise
Stepped, smoothed or slewed randomness for texture and wander.
transient
Listens for hits, then fires a trigger plus an envelope on every one it hears.
env follow
Tracks how loud you are playing and turns that into a control voltage.
timing
Spreads hits as evenly as possible across a bar, so rhythms land musically instead of bunched.
Audio history in a standalone

A rolling capture strip runs beneath the panel, always recording the plugin's output. No transport, nothing to arm. Click-drag across the waveform to select, then drag the slice straight into your DAW timeline. ARM flips it to ring-capture for hands-free takes.

Where presets live

In your user folder, outside the plugin install locations, so reinstalling or updating never touches them:

windows
%APPDATA%\WeaverAudio
macos
~/Library/WeaverAudio

Copy that folder to move your presets to another computer. Sharing a patch with other people happens from the rack's community tab.

updates and versions what arrives, going back, old sessions

How do updates arrive?

When a release comes out, the Manager lists it under updates. Tick it and click apply: it installs over the top, and your presets and activation stay. It never closes your DAW; if a plugin is open somewhere, it waits for you to close it. The Manager starts with your computer, checks in the background, and pre-downloads while you are signed in, so applying is quick. When the Manager itself has an update it offers that too, and installs it when you say so.

Installed with the installers instead of the Manager? Those do not update themselves; download the new installer from your account page.

Going back to an earlier version

settings → release in the Manager installs one of the last three releases instead of the current one. An older release may not include a plugin a newer one added; the Manager tells you before it removes anything.

Will an update change my saved sessions?

Controls are never removed and their ids are never reused, so every control you set keeps its value when a session reopens on a newer build. Changes to how a module sounds are held for major versions, with bug fixes the exception; a point release should not change a mix you have already printed.

What does the update check send?

It fetches one public file that lists the current release. The request carries no licence serial, no email address, no account identifier and no install identifier. It can be switched off in the plugin.

privacy and data what we collect, who else sees it

Less than you would expect. The privacy policy spells out every case; these are the ones people ask about.

What do you record when I sign in?

The event, the email address, the browser's user-agent string, and your time-zone and language settings. That is how the account page can show you where your account was last used. It does not include your IP address.

What does activation send?

A hashed identifier for the machine and the computer's name, so you can recognise it on your account page and release it from there. The Manager sends no analytics and no crash reports, and keeps your sign-in in the operating system's encrypted storage.

Analytics, crash reports, cookies

Plugin analytics and crash reports are two separate opt-ins, off by default. On the website, advertising pixels load only after you click Accept on the consent banner, and most pages carry none at all. The pages that run no analytics say so in their source.

Who else sees my data, and how long is it kept?

Stripe (payment), SendGrid (email) and Google Firebase (sign-in, the database and its analytics). Support email is kept three years; sales records five years or more, as Australian tax law requires. The privacy policy has the full table.

the company who, where, and how to reach a person

Who makes this?

One person. David Weaver writes the code, draws the faceplates, builds this website and answers the email, from Naarm/Melbourne. He is an audio programmer who has worked for Obsidian Entertainment, Epic Games and Neon Giant; who makes it has the rest, and the quick tips are him on camera.

How do I reach a person?

Email [email protected]. Sales, support, licences, refunds and privacy requests all arrive in the same inbox, and it is read by the person who wrote the code. We aim to reply within two business days, Melbourne time.

To get a real answer first time, include: your operating system and version, your DAW, the plugin and its version (the Manager shows it), whether you installed with the Manager or the installers, and what you see, in words or a screenshot.

talk to a person. usually within two business days.

One inbox, answered by the person who wrote the code. Tell us your OS, your DAW and what you are seeing, and you get a real answer rather than a ticket number.
